In response to the very positive feedback and high level of participation from the Members of the Kenyan Parliament to the “Executive Seminar on Index-Based Livestock Insurance” in April 2018 (https://mombasa-2018.climate-risk-transfer.org/), the Strategic Alliance on Climate Risk Transfer Solutions, a collaboration between Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd., provided a second edition of this seminar on the 24th of July, this time in the capital Nairobi.

The Executive Seminar took place in Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi and attracted more than 50 attendants from the public and private sectors to talk about the Kenya Livestock Insurance Programme (KLIP) and the opportunities of expanding the Programme’s outreach. The Strategic Alliance conducted this new event with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, the World Bank Group, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), APA Insurance and Takaful Africa Group, targeting Members of the Kenyan Parliament. The workshop delivered a platform for discussion and provided deeper insights for livestock insurance in Kenya. Furthermore, the Q&A sessions ensured a strong involvement of all participants.

The KLIP is an index-based livestock insurance program that seeks to insure pastoralists against drought-related risks. Since its inception in 2014, pay-outs of more than KES 700 million (equivalent to around USD 7 million) have been made to 32,000 pastoralists in need of drought assistance. Today, the program covers close to 80,000 people and 66,000 livestock units.
